Google is working on a new privacy-focused feature in Android 16 QPR3 that aims to give users clearer visibility into how apps access location data. The upcoming update introduces a simple on-screen indicator that appears whenever an app is actively tracking a user’s location.
The feature is currently available in beta and is expected to roll out more widely with the official release early next year.
New Location Indicator Explained
In Android 16 QPR3, users may notice a blue dot with a map icon displayed near the battery indicator at the top of the screen. This icon only appears when an app is actively accessing location data, making it immediately clear when tracking is happening in real time.
Tapping the indicator in the notification view reveals which app or apps are using location services, allowing users to quickly take action. From there, users can close the app or adjust location permissions directly.
Builds on Existing Android Privacy Features
This new location indicator expands on Android’s existing privacy tools. Previous versions of Android already display a visual alert when apps access the camera or microphone. With Android 16 QPR3, location tracking joins that list.
When an app uses both location data and the camera, the indicators are combined, showing multiple icons together to reflect all active permissions in use.
Currently Limited to Beta Devices
At present, the feature is available only on Pixel devices running the Android 16 QPR3 beta. However, similar privacy indicators introduced in the past eventually expanded to other Android devices, suggesting broader availability in the future.
