Android Adds ‘Call Reason’ to Help Users Flag Urgent Calls Before Pickup

Android

Android is rolling out a new calling improvement designed to reduce missed important calls. The feature, called “Call Reason,” lets callers mark a phone call as urgent so that the recipient can identify its importance before answering.

The urgency tag appears directly on the incoming call screen, and if the call is missed, it also shows up in the call history, making it easier to remember when a follow-up is needed.

How Call Reason Works

Call Reason is currently available in beta testing within the Phone by Google app. The feature requires:

  • Both users to have Phone by Google set as the default calling app.
  • The caller to already be saved in the recipient’s Contacts list.

This ensures the system works only between trusted contacts—not anonymous or unknown numbers.

Why Call Reason Matters

Many users send calls straight to voicemail or decline calls when they’re busy. Call Reason helps communicate urgency without needing to send an additional message, helping friends, family, and coworkers understand when something needs immediate attention.

Even if the call isn’t picked up right away, the urgent label stays visible in the call history, which helps act as a reminder to call back for an important topic.

Future Possibilities

Right now, the feature only allows marking calls as “urgent,” but users are already hoping for:

  • Custom short messages
  • Emojis
  • Priority categories (e.g., “work,” “emergency,” “family”)

Such options would improve context even further before answering a call.

How to Check If You Can Use Call Reason

Since the feature is rolling out gradually, availability varies by device. Android users can check:

  1. Google Play Store → Profile → Manage apps & devices → Check for updates
  2. Ensure Phone by Google is set as the default calling app:
Settings → Apps → Default apps → Phone app

As testing continues, wider adoption is expected across more Android phones in the coming months. The Call Reason feature highlights Android’s continued focus on smarter communication and user convenience.
