Google has officially extended its timeline for replacing Google Assistant with Gemini on Android devices. While the company earlier aimed to complete the transition by the end of 2025, it has now confirmed that the migration will continue into 2026 to ensure a smoother and more seamless user experience.
Transition to Gemini Faces Delay
In a recent update, Google stated that the effort to upgrade Assistant users to Gemini across most mobile devices is taking longer than expected. Instead of rushing the rollout, the company is adjusting its schedule to minimize disruptions and address technical challenges before fully switching users over.
As a result, Google Assistant will remain available on Android phones and tablets through 2025, with the complete phase-out now expected in 2026. Google has also indicated that more clarity around the transition will be shared in the coming months.
Google Assistant to Be Discontinued Across Platforms
Once the migration is complete, Google Assistant will no longer be supported on Android devices. Additionally, the standalone Google Assistant app on iOS is also expected to be discontinued, signaling a full shift toward Gemini as Google’s primary AI assistant.
Currently, users still have the option to switch back to Google Assistant from within the Gemini app, including on newer devices like the Pixel 10 series. However, this option is likely temporary and part of a gradual, rolling transition strategy rather than an immediate switch.
Why the Shift to 2026 Makes Sense
The delay could be due to Google refining Gemini’s feature set to better match or exceed Google Assistant’s capabilities. Another factor may be the complexity of migrating millions of users without causing performance or usability issues—especially during peak periods like the holiday season.
With limited time left in 2025, Google appears to be prioritizing stability and user experience over speed.
Gemini Expands Beyond Smartphones
While the mobile transition continues, Gemini is already expanding across Google’s ecosystem. The AI assistant is currently available on Wear OS and is gradually rolling out to Google TV and Android Auto. Meanwhile, the Gemini for Home Early Access program remains active for smart speakers and displays.
End of an Era for Google Assistant
If the transition completes in 2026, it will mark exactly a decade since Google Assistant first launched in 2016. The move positions Gemini as Google’s next-generation AI assistant, designed to offer more advanced, context-aware, and generative AI capabilities across devices.
As Google continues refining Gemini, 2026 now stands as the year when Google Assistant officially becomes part of tech history.
