Google is preparing to launch its first AI-powered smart glasses in 2026. The company shared this update in a recent blog post, confirming that it is working on new wearable devices designed to bring AI and XR technology into everyday life.
At its I/O event earlier this year, Google announced partnerships with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. These collaborations aim to create stylish consumer smart glasses based on Android XR, the same operating system used in Samsung’s Galaxy XR headset. Since large headsets are not practical for daily use, Google wants to offer glasses that are lighter, more comfortable, and suitable for real-world environments.
Google is developing two main types of AI glasses. The first model offers screen-free assistance. It uses built-in speakers, microphones, and cameras so the user can talk to Gemini AI, take photos, and receive help without needing a display. The second model includes an in-lens display that only the wearer can see. This display can show navigation, captions, and other helpful information directly in front of the user’s eyes.
The company also shared a glimpse of Project Aura, a wired XR glasses concept created by Xreal. These glasses sit between a full XR headset and regular smart glasses. They can act as a portable workspace and entertainment device, letting users stream video or use Google apps in a more immersive way.
While Meta is currently ahead in the smart glasses market with its Ray-Ban partnership, Google is entering the competition alongside companies like Apple and Snap. To strengthen its position, Google has invested $75 million into Warby Parker to support product development and commercialization. If Warby Parker achieves certain goals, Google will invest another $75 million and also take an equity stake in the eyewear brand.
With these efforts, Google aims to bring AI-powered eyewear to consumers next year, offering a blend of practicality, style, and useful everyday features.
