On Thursday, June 12, Google Cloud experienced a significant global outage, impacting at least 13 cloud services across the U.S., Europe, and Asia. The disruption began at 10:51 a.m. PT, as confirmed by Google Cloud’s status page.
Key platforms affected included Shopify, OpenAI, GitHub, Mailchimp, Twitch, and Firebase, with thousands of outage reports flooding Downdetector. OpenAI cited login issues, and Shopify acknowledged disruptions in several services.
Google engineers worked throughout the day, with Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian later confirming full restoration across all regions and products. “We regret the disruption this caused our customers,” he said.
Cloudflare also reported problems due to its limited reliance on Google Cloud, while Amazon Web Services (AWS) confirmed it had no issues.
The outage poses a setback for Google’s cloud ambitions, as it competes with AWS and Microsoft Azure, especially amid rising demand for AI infrastructure.
