Google has officially rolled out its advanced ransomware detection and file restoration capabilities for Google Drive, marking the transition from beta to general availability.
Originally introduced in September 2025, these enhanced security features aim to protect organizations from growing ransomware threats targeting both local systems and cloud-synced data.
Stronger AI Detection with Major Performance Boost
The updated system is powered by an improved artificial intelligence model that significantly enhances threat detection. According to Google, the new model can identify up to 14 times more ransomware infections compared to its earlier beta version.
It also recognizes a wider variety of ransomware encryption patterns and performs detection much faster, reducing the time attackers have to compromise files.
How the Protection System Works
The core defense mechanism operates through the Google Drive desktop application. When suspicious ransomware activity is detected on a local device, the system immediately pauses file synchronization.
This prevents encrypted or compromised files from being uploaded to the cloud, ensuring that clean data stored in Google Workspace remains unaffected.
Real-Time Alerts and Security Monitoring
Users running Google Drive for desktop version 114 or later will receive instant alerts during a ransomware attack. In addition, warning emails are automatically sent to affected users and administrators.
IT teams can monitor incidents through alerts available in the Google Workspace Admin console, enabling faster response and improved security oversight.
Efficient File Restoration After Attacks
A key highlight of the update is the new file restoration interface. After an attack is contained, users can quickly recover compromised data by reverting files to their pre-infection state.
The system supports bulk restoration, allowing multiple files to be recovered at once—saving time and minimizing disruption. During the beta phase, thousands of users successfully tested this feature, demonstrating its reliability and scalability.
Availability Across Google Workspace Plans
The new features are enabled by default and can be managed by administrators at the organizational level within Google Workspace settings.
File restoration is widely available across most account types, including personal accounts and individual subscribers. However, ransomware detection capabilities are limited to specific plans, such as Business, Enterprise, Education, and Frontline tiers.
