Google Rolls Out New Gemini AI Features to Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive

Google Rolls Out New Gemini AI Features to Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive

Google has announced a major update to its productivity ecosystem by introducing new Gemini-powered AI capabilities across its Workspace apps, including Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides, and Google Drive.

The new tools aim to make these apps smarter and more personalized by enabling users to generate documents, spreadsheets, and presentations directly within the apps using AI.

“Help Me Create” Brings AI Draft Generation to Docs

One of the biggest additions is the “Help me create” feature in Google Docs. With this tool, users can simply describe the document they want to create, and Gemini will generate a fully formatted first draft.

The AI assistant gathers relevant context from connected services such as Gmail, Google Chat, and Drive to create more personalized content.

For example, users could prompt Gemini to draft a newsletter using meeting notes stored in Drive and event details from emails. The system then generates a structured document based on that information.

AI Tools to Improve Writing and Consistency

After generating a draft, users can refine specific sections using the “Help me write” tool. This feature allows Gemini to enhance clarity, add missing details, or improve the overall writing style without regenerating the entire document.

Another addition is the “Match writing style” feature. When multiple people collaborate on a document, writing styles can vary. Gemini can now suggest edits to unify tone and voice throughout the document.

Docs is also receiving a “Match the format” capability. This feature allows users to replicate the structure and layout of an existing document template. For instance, if you find a travel itinerary format you like, Gemini can recreate it using your personal travel details pulled from confirmation emails.

Gemini Turns Sheets Into a Collaborative AI Assistant

In Google Sheets, Gemini is evolving from a simple tool into what Google describes as a collaborative partner.

With a single prompt, the AI can gather data from Gmail, Chat, and Drive to automatically generate a structured spreadsheet.

For example, someone planning a move could ask Gemini to organize tasks into a spreadsheet that includes:

  • Packing checklists by room
  • Contact lists for utilities
  • Moving company quotes from email conversations

A new “Fill with Gemini” feature also enables users to populate tables quickly. It can generate text, categorize information, summarize data, or pull real-time details from the web through Google Search.

This makes it easier to handle tasks like tracking college applications, where Gemini can automatically gather information such as deadlines, tuition costs, and admission requirements.

AI-Powered Slide Creation in Google Slides

Gemini is also enhancing the presentation experience in Google Slides.

Users can now generate fully editable slides that match the design and theme of their presentation. The AI pulls context from emails, files, and online sources to create relevant content.

If the generated slide doesn’t match expectations, users can request adjustments with prompts like:

  • “Match the colors to the rest of my deck”
  • “Make this slide more minimal”

Google also revealed plans to introduce full presentation generation in the future, allowing users to create complete slide decks from a single prompt. For instance, a user could request a five-slide presentation for an upcoming trip or project.

Google Drive Becomes an AI-Powered Knowledge Hub

Google Drive is also evolving beyond simple file storage.

With the new update, natural-language searches in Drive will display an AI Overview at the top of search results. Similar to summaries in Google Search, the overview highlights key information from relevant files and includes source references.

A new “Ask Gemini in Drive” feature lets users ask complex questions across documents, emails, calendars, and web information.

For example, someone reviewing financial records could select tax-related files and ask Gemini for guidance on what questions to ask a tax advisor before filing.

Availability of the New Gemini Features

Google confirmed that the new AI capabilities are rolling out in beta starting today.

The features will first be available to subscribers of Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra plans. Currently, the tools support English worldwide for Docs, Sheets, and Slides, while the new Drive features are initially limited to users in the United States.

With these updates, Google is positioning Gemini as a core part of its productivity ecosystem, turning everyday workspace apps into intelligent assistants that can help users create, organize, and analyze information more efficiently.
