Google Gemini Overlay & Gemini Live Redesign Rolls Out on Android

Google Gemini Overlay

Google Gemini is receiving another significant visual overhaul on Android, as Google continues to refine its AI experience. Following updates in February and March, the company is now rolling out a fresh redesign for both the Gemini overlay and Gemini Live, signaling rapid development and iteration.

Gemini Overlay Gets a Cleaner, Unified Interface

The latest update introduces a more streamlined design for the Gemini overlay, focusing on improved usability and accessibility.

Previously, the overlay featured separate menus for attachments and tools. With this redesign, Google has merged these into a single, unified interface. The input bar is now slightly narrower, while the “Ask Gemini” field appears more prominent. Additionally, the microphone icon has been updated to a cleaner outline style.

Tapping the ‘+’ button now opens a bottom sheet with a visually rich layout. At the top, users will find a carousel of options including:

  • Photos
  • Camera
  • Files
  • Drive
  • Notebooks

These are displayed as large, rounded icons for easier navigation.

Below that, users can access advanced AI-powered tools such as:

  • Create image
  • Create video
  • Create music
  • Canvas
  • Deep research
  • Guided learning
  • Personal Intelligence (toggle)

This combined tools interface aligns with designs Google has been testing on the web, and it is expected to expand further across the full mobile app.

Gemini Live Introduces a Floating Experience

Gemini Live is also getting a major redesign, with a focus on multitasking and a less intrusive interface.

Instead of the previous full-width pill design, Gemini Live now appears as a floating overlay. The new interface includes:

  • A central waveform display
  • Screen sharing option
  • Keyboard shortcut to exit Live
  • Captions button in the top-right corner

As users navigate their phone, the overlay dynamically shrinks into a smaller circular bubble, making it easier to continue conversations without interrupting other tasks.

Full App Experience Also Updated

The redesign extends beyond the overlay. When launching Gemini Live within the app, the traditional fullscreen interface has been replaced.

Now, the floating overlay appears on top of the regular home screen, creating a more seamless and multitasking-friendly experience. This change reflects Google’s broader push toward integrating AI more naturally into everyday mobile usage.

Rapid Evolution of Google’s AI Interface

With multiple updates rolling out in quick succession, Google is clearly accelerating development of Gemini’s interface. These changes aim to make AI interactions more intuitive, accessible, and deeply integrated into Android workflows.

The latest redesign of Gemini overlay and Gemini Live represents another step toward a smarter, more fluid AI assistant experience on Android. With a cleaner interface, unified tools, and a floating Live experience, users can expect more efficient and natural interactions with Gemini going forward.
