India’s AI Boom Pushes Firms to Trade Near-Term Revenue for User Growth

India’s AI Boom

India has emerged as the world’s fastest-growing market for generative AI apps, but the next phase of growth will test whether massive adoption can translate into sustainable revenue.

After months of aggressive promotional campaigns offering free premium access, major AI firms are beginning to scale back discounts — setting the stage for a critical conversion test in one of the world’s most price-sensitive digital markets.

India Leads Global GenAI Downloads

In 2025, India became the largest market globally for generative AI app downloads, with installs rising more than 200% year over year. The country now accounts for roughly one-fifth of global GenAI app downloads, far ahead of many developed markets.

Platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity AI, and Claude have seen explosive growth in the region, fueled by free trials, telecom bundles, and discounted premium tiers.

India also hosted a major AI summit in New Delhi, attended by leaders including Sam Altman, Sundar Pichai, and Dario Amodei, highlighting the country’s rising strategic importance in the global AI race.

Revenue Still Lags Behind

Despite accounting for about 20% of global GenAI downloads, India contributes only around 1% of in-app purchase revenue. That gap underscores a growing monetization challenge.

Late 2025 data showed that while downloads surged through September and October, in-app revenue began declining in November and December. Revenue for ChatGPT, in particular, fell sharply after the launch of heavily discounted access tiers.

This suggests that while free and low-cost offers accelerated adoption, they also compressed short-term revenue — effectively prioritizing user acquisition over profitability.

Free Offers Wind Down

Several early promotional campaigns have now ended:

  • Perplexity discontinued its bundled Pro offer with a major Indian telecom provider.
  • OpenAI’s discounted ChatGPT access tier is no longer widely available in India.

These moves signal a strategic pivot. Companies are now testing whether millions of newly acquired users are willing to pay for premium AI services once promotional pricing disappears.

Why India Matters

India’s digital scale makes it a crucial battleground:

  • Over 1 billion internet users
  • Approximately 700 million smartphone users
  • A young, mobile-first population

The country accounted for nearly 19% of the global user base for leading AI assistant apps in 2025 — ahead of the United States.

ChatGPT remains the dominant platform in India, followed by Gemini, Perplexity, and Meta AI. However, user engagement metrics still trail more mature markets. On average, U.S. users spend more time per week and log more sessions compared to Indian users.

The Long-Term Monetization Strategy

AI firms appear to be betting on long-term integration rather than immediate returns. The strategy is clear:

  1. Reduce pricing friction
  2. Accelerate adoption
  3. Build daily usage habits
  4. Convert engaged users into subscribers

However, India’s value-conscious consumer base means pricing pressure is likely to remain intense. Lower-cost subscription tiers, telecom partnerships, and micro-transaction models may become essential for sustained growth.

India’s AI boom has firmly established the country as a global growth engine for generative AI platforms. Yet the coming months will reveal whether record download numbers can evolve into consistent revenue streams.

The opportunity is massive — but so is the challenge. For AI leaders, success in India will depend not just on scale, but on sustainable monetization in a market that demands both innovation and affordability.
