Lego is taking imaginative play to the next level with the launch of “smart bricks”—interactive Lego components that produce sound, light, and music without requiring a screen. Unveiled at the CES consumer electronics show in Las Vegas, the innovation debuts in new Star Wars-themed Lego sets, blending traditional creative play with modern technology.
The Danish toy giant says the new smart brick system is designed to enhance storytelling while preserving Lego’s core appeal: hands-on, imaginative play.
What Are Lego Smart Bricks?
Lego smart bricks look almost identical to a standard two-by-four Lego brick, but inside they house a custom-made chip smaller than a single Lego stud. These miniature chips power built-in speakers and light effects that respond to how children move and play with their creations.
Unlike many modern toys, the smart bricks do not rely on screens, apps, or smartphones, making them a screen-free alternative in an increasingly digital play environment.
Interactive Star Wars Gameplay Comes to Life
The smart bricks are launching in three Lego Star Wars sets, starting with iconic spacecraft from the franchise. When installed in Luke Skywalker’s X-wing fighter, the bricks generate realistic “woosh” and flight sounds that change as the ship twists and turns through the air. Even the distinctive beeps and electronic chatter of R2-D2 are recreated.
Adding a second smart brick to Darth Vader’s TIE fighter unlocks interactive combat. During a mock dogfight, the bricks communicate with each other, producing sound effects to signal laser hits and determining whether enough accurate blasts have been landed to destroy the opposing ship.
Lights, Music, and Iconic Star Wars Themes
Beyond sound effects, Lego’s smart bricks also emit light and play music. During demonstrations, Lego executives revealed that players may occasionally hear “The Imperial March” while controlling Darth Vader’s ship, adding atmosphere and drama to play sessions.
This feature-driven design aims to enhance immersion while still leaving room for imagination and creative storytelling.
Pricing and Availability
The added technology comes at a premium price:
- Luke Skywalker’s X-wing fighter, which includes a smart Luke mini-figure, will retail for £79.99
- Darth Vader’s TIE fighter will be priced at £59.99
These sets are positioned as premium Lego experiences for dedicated fans and collectors.
Mixed Reactions From Fans and Experts
While many fans welcome the innovation, reactions online have been mixed. Some Lego enthusiasts argue that sound effects replace the imaginative “swoosh” and “pew-pew” noises children naturally create during play.
Others joked online about whether the introduction of smart bricks means all traditional Lego pieces are now “stupid bricks.” However, some fans expressed excitement about future possibilities, speculating about themed sets like a Lego Titanic with built-in music.
Play experts have also questioned whether adding technology could undermine Lego’s long-standing strength—encouraging open-ended creativity.
Lego’s Strategy in a Screen-Dominated World
Lego’s move comes at a time when children are increasingly engaged with screen-based platforms. Games like Roblox, which reportedly has around 150 million daily users, dominate children’s entertainment.
According to Tom Donaldson, Senior Vice President at the Lego Group, the goal of smart bricks is to combine creativity, technology, and storytelling while keeping play screen-free. Lego believes this approach helps maintain its core values while adapting to modern expectations.
With smart bricks, Lego is redefining interactive play without sacrificing imagination. By integrating sound, light, and communication directly into the bricks, the company aims to modernize its iconic toy while staying true to its creative roots. Whether embraced as innovation or debated as unnecessary tech, Lego smart bricks represent a bold new chapter in the brand’s 70-year legacy.
