Meta Introduces AI-Powered Message Summaries on WhatsApp

WhatsApp

Meta is enhancing WhatsApp’s user experience with the rollout of AI-generated message summaries, designed to help users efficiently catch up on unread conversations. This new feature, powered by Meta AI, aims to provide a private and convenient way for individuals to review lengthy or missed chats—all while maintaining the platform’s strict privacy and encryption standards.

What Is the New WhatsApp AI Summary Feature?

The optional feature introduces AI-powered summaries of unread messages within any chat. When activated, the tool privately processes conversations and generates a concise overview visible only to the user. This ensures message privacy is preserved, as neither Meta nor WhatsApp can view the message content or summaries.

Privacy-Centric Design: No Compromise on Encryption

Meta emphasizes that the tool leverages its Private Processing technology, allowing summaries to be generated without exposing user data. According to the company, “Message Summaries uses Private Processing technology, which allows Meta AI to generate a response without Meta or WhatsApp ever seeing your messages.”

Users can rest assured that end-to-end encryption remains intact, and the summaries are not visible to anyone else in the chat. A small icon indicates if the feature is available for your account, but it remains disabled by default.

Where and How to Use It

Currently, the feature is being rolled out in the U.S. with support for the English language, with plans to expand to other regions and languages later this year. You can enable or disable the summaries by navigating to:

Settings > Chats > Private Processing

This new AI setting gives users the ability to toggle features like message summaries or writing suggestions on or off according to their preference.

Meta AI’s Growing Role in WhatsApp

This addition builds on previous Meta AI integrations introduced in April, where users could interact with Meta AI in chats by tagging messages. However, until now, Meta AI couldn’t access or summarize message content.

With this update, WhatsApp can now process requests more intelligently, providing features such as message summaries and AI-generated writing suggestions, all while respecting user privacy.
