Technology company Meta has announced that it will discontinue support for end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) messaging on Instagram beginning May 8, 2026. The change means that users who previously enabled encrypted chats will no longer have access to the feature after the deadline.
According to the company, users with affected conversations will receive instructions explaining how to download messages or media they want to keep before the feature is removed.
Why Meta Is Removing the Feature
Meta stated that the decision comes after limited adoption of encrypted messaging on Instagram. The company explained that only a small percentage of users opted into the E2EE option for direct messages.
As an alternative, Meta recommends users switch to WhatsApp, which offers end-to-end encryption by default for private conversations.
Background of Instagram’s Encryption Feature
The encryption feature was first introduced in testing in 2021 as part of Mark Zuckerberg’s broader vision for a privacy-focused social networking environment.
Unlike WhatsApp, however, the encryption option on Instagram was never turned on by default and was only available in select regions.
The Debate Around Encrypted Messaging
End-to-end encryption has long been considered a major step forward for digital privacy because it ensures that only the sender and recipient can read the messages. Even the platform hosting the conversation cannot access the encrypted content.
However, the technology has also been controversial. Law enforcement agencies and child safety organizations argue that encrypted messaging platforms can make it harder to detect illegal activity such as:
- Child exploitation material
- Terrorist communication
- Organized criminal activity
This challenge is often referred to as the “Going Dark” problem, where authorities struggle to access communication data during investigations.
Growing Global Attention on Encryption
Governments and regulators around the world are increasingly examining how encrypted communications should be handled. For example, the European Commission is expected to present a technology roadmap addressing encryption, focusing on ways to enable lawful access to encrypted data while protecting cybersecurity and privacy rights.
Meanwhile, other social media companies are also taking cautious approaches to encryption. For instance, TikTok has indicated that it currently does not plan to implement end-to-end encryption for direct messages, citing concerns about user safety and platform moderation.
What Instagram Users Should Do
Instagram users who currently use encrypted chats will be prompted to download their messages and media before May 2026. After that date, encrypted conversations will no longer be supported on the platform.
While the feature is being removed from Instagram, encrypted messaging will continue to play a central role in Meta’s ecosystem through WhatsApp and other secure communication services.
The move highlights the ongoing balance tech companies face between privacy protection, platform safety, and regulatory pressure in the evolving digital communication landscape.
