Meta Platforms has announced that it will temporarily suspend teenagers’ access to AI characters across all of its apps globally, as the company works on launching a redesigned AI experience tailored specifically for younger users.
In an updated blog post focused on protecting minors, Meta said the change will roll out in the coming weeks and will remain in place until the revised teen-friendly AI tools are ready.
Why Meta Is Blocking Teen Access to AI Characters
According to Meta, the pause is part of a broader effort to strengthen safety standards for minors using its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger. The company acknowledged growing concerns around how AI chatbots interact with teens and the potential exposure to inappropriate or harmful content.
“Starting in the coming weeks, teens will no longer be able to access AI characters across our apps until the updated experience is ready,” Meta stated.
Parental Controls Still Pending
Back in October, Meta previewed new parental control tools that would allow parents to disable private conversations between teens and AI characters. These controls were introduced in response to criticism over chatbot behavior that some users described as overly personal or flirtatious.
However, Meta confirmed that these parental controls have not yet been rolled out, prompting the company to take a more decisive step by suspending teen access altogether.
PG-13 Guidelines to Shape Future AI for Teens
Meta has also emphasized that its upcoming AI experiences for teenagers will follow PG-13 content guidelines, similar to movie rating standards. The goal is to ensure age-appropriate interactions and reduce the risk of minors encountering unsuitable material.
