Meta is taking a major step to secure energy for its growing artificial intelligence infrastructure by funding new power generation projects for its largest data center yet.

$27 Billion Data Center and Energy Expansion

The company is building a massive $27 billion data center in Richland Parish, which is expected to become its biggest facility globally. To support its enormous power needs, Meta has partnered with Entergy Louisiana to develop extensive energy infrastructure.

This includes:

  • Seven new natural gas power plants
  • 240 miles of transmission lines
  • Battery storage systems across three locations

Together, the gas plants will generate up to 5,200 megawatts of electricity, while transmission lines will operate at 500 kilovolts, ensuring reliable large-scale power delivery.

Renewables and Future Nuclear Plans

In addition to natural gas, Meta has committed to supporting up to 2,500 MW of new renewable energy capacity. The company has also signed a memorandum of understanding for potential future nuclear energy development, highlighting a long-term strategy to diversify its energy mix.

Rising Energy Demands from AI Infrastructure

The expansion reflects the growing energy demands of AI-driven data centers. As companies scale their AI capabilities, power consumption has become a critical concern, both economically and environmentally.

Meta and other tech giants have pledged to offset the impact of these energy-intensive facilities by funding new electricity generation rather than relying on existing grids.

Public Concerns and Regulatory Pressure

Despite these commitments, concerns remain. Local communities and policymakers have raised alarms about:

  • Rising electricity costs
  • Environmental impact
  • Strain on regional infrastructure

A recent poll indicates that a majority of Americans support stronger regulation of AI-related infrastructure. Lawmakers, including Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have introduced legislation proposing a temporary halt on new data center construction until clearer regulations are in place.

Industry Promises vs. Accountability

Tech companies, including Meta, have publicly committed to covering the full cost of new energy resources required for their operations. However, critics argue that these pledges lack enforceable mechanisms, raising questions about long-term accountability.

Meta’s investment in energy infrastructure underscores the massive scale of modern AI operations. While the move ensures power reliability for its Louisiana data center, it also highlights a broader challenge—balancing technological growth with environmental responsibility and public trust.

As AI continues to expand, the intersection of energy, policy, and sustainability will remain a critical issue for both the tech industry and regulators.
