Streaming giant Netflix is set to discontinue support for several older devices beginning March 2, 2026, potentially affecting an estimated 87 million users worldwide.
The biggest change impacts the PlayStation 3, marking the end of Netflix availability on the nearly two-decade-old console.
Netflix to Drop Support for PS3
According to user reports, a warning message has begun appearing on affected devices:
“Unfortunately, Netflix will no longer be available on this device after March 2, 2026.”
The PlayStation 3 originally launched in 2006 and became one of the first gaming consoles to offer streaming services. In 2009, Netflix partnered with Sony to bring streaming to the PS3, initially requiring users to request a Blu-ray disc for access due to exclusivity arrangements with Microsoft at the time.
By 2010, Netflix transitioned to a standalone app on the console, making streaming more accessible to millions of users.
Now, after 17 years of service, the PS3 will officially lose Netflix support.
Other Devices Affected
In addition to the PS3, Netflix will also discontinue support for:
- Smart TVs over 10 years old
- The BT TV Box Z4
- The BT TV Recordable Box G4
- Select older set-top boxes
These devices may lack the hardware capabilities required to handle Netflix’s evolving technology standards, including improved video compression, higher resolutions, and enhanced security protocols.
Why Is Netflix Ending Support?
Over the years, Netflix has significantly expanded its platform capabilities. The app now supports:
- 4K Ultra HD streaming
- HDR formats
- Advanced content recommendations
- Stronger security and encryption standards
Older hardware, such as the PS3, cannot efficiently support these modern streaming requirements. As Netflix continues to innovate, maintaining compatibility with outdated devices becomes increasingly difficult.
The PS3 was the last seventh-generation gaming console to still officially support Netflix. Newer consoles like the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 will remain unaffected.
What Users Can Do
For affected users, there are several alternatives:
- Most modern smart TVs already have built-in Netflix support
- Affordable streaming sticks offer upgraded performance
- Gaming consoles such as PS4 and PS5 continue to support the app
Upgrading to a newer streaming device not only ensures compatibility but also improves streaming quality and speed compared to older hardware.
The Bigger Picture
Netflix’s decision reflects a broader trend in the tech industry: phasing out legacy hardware to prioritize performance, security, and advanced streaming capabilities.
While the move may inconvenience long-time PS3 users, it highlights how far streaming technology has evolved since Netflix first entered the console market nearly two decades ago.
As March 2026 approaches, affected users are encouraged to check Netflix’s official compatible devices list to ensure uninterrupted service.
