OpenAI is reportedly expanding beyond software and into consumer hardware, with plans to release an AI-powered smart speaker as early as 2027.
According to industry reports, the company has assembled a team of more than 200 employees focused on developing a lineup of AI-driven devices, including smart glasses, a smart speaker, and even a smart lamp.
Smart Speaker With Built-In Camera and Facial Recognition
The first device expected to reach the market is a smart speaker equipped with a camera. Unlike traditional voice assistants, the device is reportedly designed to better understand its surroundings by visually identifying objects nearby and analyzing conversations taking place around it.
The camera would also support facial recognition technology similar to Face ID, allowing users to authenticate purchases securely.
The speaker is expected to be priced between $200 and $300, with shipments potentially beginning in early 2027.
OpenAI’s Broader AI Hardware Vision
The smart speaker is reportedly part of a broader hardware strategy. OpenAI is also said to be developing AI-powered smart glasses, a category currently led by Meta. However, those glasses may not launch until 2028.
A smart lamp prototype has also been created, though it remains unclear whether the product will reach commercialization.

OpenAI’s hardware ambitions gained momentum following its $6.5 billion acquisition of io Products, the startup founded by legendary designer Jony Ive.
Ive, who played a key role in shaping the design language of Apple for decades, is now positioned to lead OpenAI’s hardware design efforts. His involvement suggests that OpenAI aims to compete not just on AI capabilities but also on premium industrial design and user experience.
Challenges Ahead: Privacy and Technical Hurdles
Despite the ambitious roadmap, the project has reportedly faced delays due to technical complexities, privacy concerns, and the significant computing power required to operate advanced AI features in a consumer device.
A camera-equipped AI speaker capable of continuously observing its environment could raise privacy questions among consumers wary of always-on devices. Balancing functionality with trust and transparency may prove crucial for adoption.
