Perplexity has officially expanded access to its new AI-powered Personal Computer platform, making the software available to all Mac users through its latest desktop application.
The launch marks a major step in the growing race for local AI agents that can automate tasks, interact with files and applications, and manage complex workflows directly from a user’s computer.
What Is Perplexity Personal Computer?
Personal Computer is Perplexity’s advanced AI agent system designed to operate directly alongside a user’s everyday workflow. The software extends the capabilities of the company’s broader AI assistant platform, known as Perplexity Computer, by bringing automation and AI task management onto personal devices.
Unlike traditional cloud-only assistants, Personal Computer can access local files, applications, web tools, and connected services to complete multi-step tasks autonomously.
Perplexity says the goal is to create an AI-powered work environment that operates where users already spend most of their time — on their own computers.
Designed as an Alternative to OpenClaw
The launch comes amid increasing demand for AI agents capable of handling real-world computing tasks. Interest in local AI automation surged after the rise of OpenClaw, an open-source AI agent system known for performing desktop actions on behalf of users.
However, security concerns around elevated permissions and unrestricted system access have raised questions about the safety of such tools.
Perplexity claims its Personal Computer platform offers a more secure alternative by combining local device interaction with controlled server-side development environments.
What the New Mac App Can Do
At launch, Perplexity’s new Mac application supports:
- Access to local files and folders
- Integration with native macOS applications
- Web browsing and online task automation
- Support for over 400 connectors and integrations
- Cross-app workflows and document comparisons
- AI-assisted drafting and note organization
- Remote task management through iPhone access
The software can coordinate workflows across multiple applications, allowing AI agents to move information between documents, spreadsheets, and productivity tools.
For example, users can ask the AI to gather notes from one app and generate a report in another, or compare files stored across different platforms.
Integration With Perplexity Comet Browser
Perplexity also revealed deeper integration with its AI-powered Comet browser. When paired together, the browser allows Personal Computer to automate web-based workflows even without dedicated third-party connectors.
This could make the platform especially useful for research, online productivity, and business automation tasks.
Remote AI Control From iPhone
One of the standout features is remote accessibility. Users running Personal Computer on devices such as a Mac Mini can access and manage AI tasks directly from an iPhone.
The mobile connection allows users to initiate workflows, approve requests, and monitor autonomous tasks while away from their computers.
Older Perplexity Mac App to Be Retired
As part of the rollout, Perplexity confirmed that its previous Mac application will soon be discontinued. The company says it plans to focus entirely on developing the new Personal Computer experience moving forward.
Currently, the app is only available through direct download from Perplexity’s official website and is not listed on the Mac App Store.
AI Agents Continue Expanding Beyond Chatbots
The release highlights a broader shift in the AI industry as companies move beyond simple chatbots toward autonomous digital agents capable of handling productivity tasks independently.
With competitors including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Microsoft investing heavily in AI-powered workflow automation, Perplexity’s Personal Computer positions the company as a growing player in the next generation of personal computing tools.
