Razer has officially unveiled the Core X V2, a next-gen external graphics enclosure (eGPU) that delivers a major performance boost for gaming laptops and handhelds—provided you’re ready to invest in the required add-ons. Priced at $350, the Core X V2 is Razer’s first eGPU to support Thunderbolt 5, offering blazing-fast bandwidth and up to 140W of power delivery via a single cable.
What’s New in the Core X V2?
The Core X V2 brings significant improvements over its predecessors:
- Thunderbolt 5 compatibility, delivering up to 80Gbps bandwidth.
- Support for larger 4-slot AMD and Nvidia GPUs.
- Backwards compatibility with Thunderbolt 4.
- A 120mm internal cooling fan for thermal management.
One of the most notable changes is the modular power supply design. Unlike earlier models like the Core X Chroma, which came with a built-in PSU, the V2 requires users to purchase a separate ATX power supply tailored to their GPU’s needs (plus 230W for the enclosure itself). While this offers flexibility for higher-power GPUs, it adds an extra cost for buyers.
Razer has also removed the integrated USB and Ethernet ports found in previous Core enclosures, meaning gamers will need a separate Thunderbolt 5 dock if they want to connect multiple peripherals. Conveniently, Razer has launched a $390 Thunderbolt 5 Dock with RGB lighting to complement the new Core X V2.
While the Razer Core X V2 promises future-proof connectivity and GPU support for power users, it’s best suited for enthusiasts who already have—or plan to buy—a high-end GPU, compatible Thunderbolt 5 laptop, and a sufficient power supply. For casual users or budget-conscious gamers, the added hardware requirements may outweigh the benefits.
The Core X V2 is listed on Razer’s website but not yet available for purchase. Razer’s Thunderbolt 5 Dock, however, is already on sale.
Stay tuned for updates on availability and performance reviews as the Core X V2 hits the market.
