Rivian Owners to Gain Apple Watch Access for Vehicle Controls

Rivian
Apple Watch Access for Vehicle Controls

Rivian is expanding its tech ecosystem by enabling drivers to control their vehicles directly from an Apple Watch. The new companion app, launching next week, will integrate with the broader Rivian mobile app and allow users to perform essential vehicle functions without needing their phones.

Key Features of the Apple Watch Integration

The upcoming update will allow owners to:

  • Lock and unlock doors
  • Vent windows
  • Trigger the vehicle alarm

In addition to these basic functions, Rivian is introducing customizable controls. Drivers can use the Apple Watch’s digital crown to adjust the vehicle’s interior temperature or set a target state of charge for the battery. Users can also select four quick-access controls tailored to their most-used features.

The smartwatch integration is part of a larger vehicle software update rolling out this week.

Differences Between First-Gen and Second-Gen R1 Models

There are some feature differences depending on the vehicle generation:

  • Owners of first-generation Rivian R1T trucks and Rivian R1S SUVs will need to manually open the Apple Watch app and tap the lock icon to secure or unlock the vehicle.
  • Second-generation R1 models will support automatic unlocking as the driver approaches, provided a digital key is configured.

This enhancement builds on Rivian’s push toward seamless digital access and improved user experience.

Broader Software Enhancements

Beyond smartwatch integration, the latest software update includes several performance and usability upgrades:

  • Enhanced “kneel mode” that lowers the vehicle an additional inch for easier entry and exit
  • Ability to switch between drive modes without disengaging advanced driver assistance systems
  • A new cold-weather battery indicator that adds a blue tint to the on-screen battery graphic, showing energy usage for heating

These updates highlight Rivian’s strategy of delivering value through over-the-air software improvements.

Software as a Core Business Strategy

While Rivian is known for its electric trucks and SUVs, software development has become a central pillar of its long-term growth strategy. In 2024, Rivian entered a $5.8 billion technology joint venture with Volkswagen, under which Volkswagen will invest in Rivian through 2027 based on performance milestones.

Software developed through this partnership will power future vehicles within the Volkswagen Group, reinforcing Rivian’s role not just as an EV maker but as a technology provider.

With the Apple Watch integration, Rivian continues to position itself at the intersection of electric mobility and connected consumer technology — appealing directly to tech-savvy drivers who value convenience and innovation.
