The latest Android beta version of WhatsApp (v2.25.19.21) has an integrated document scanning feature that allows users to scan physical documents directly within the app. This update eliminates the need for third-party apps by offering a seamless way to capture, convert, and share documents as PDFs directly within WhatsApp. It is available through the Google Play Beta Program.
When the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.18.29 update originally appeared, the document scanning capability was still in the development stage. However, as part of the most recent upgrade, it is currently being tested with the general public. After downloading the update from the Google Play Store, a few beta testers have already reported having access to this new feature.
The user’s phone’s camera opens immediately when they choose the “Scan document” option from the document-sharing interface. In order to help position the document accurately for capture, it provides a live view. Both manual and automatic capturing options are available with this capability. In automatic mode, WhatsApp recognizes the margins of the paper and takes the picture automatically for a faster experience, while in manual mode, users have control over when to snap the picture.
WhatsApp instantaneously processes the photo once it is taken and turns it into a PDF file. In this manner, the document is prepared for instant sharing in a group discussion or private chat. Through Android’s built-in document capture APIs, the full scanning and converting process takes place locally on the user’s smartphone. Until the user chooses to transfer it over WhatsApp, the generated file is kept on the device.
