Microsoft has introduced a powerful new AI-driven feature in Notepad as part of its latest Windows 11 update, now rolling out to Insiders in the Canary and Dev channels. Called Write, this feature brings generative AI capabilities directly into Notepad, enabling users to draft or enhance content effortlessly based on prompts.

AI-Powered Text Creation in Notepad

The Write feature leverages Microsoft’s Copilot AI to help users compose content more efficiently. Simply right-click within the Notepad document or highlight existing text to access the feature. A prompt window allows users to enter instructions, and the AI then inserts suggested content, which can be edited, accepted, or refined with follow-up prompts.

This feature builds on Microsoft’s earlier Notepad tools, such as Summarize, introduced in March to generate concise overviews of documents, and Rewrite, launched last November to adjust the tone, length, or phrasing of text.

New AI Features Across Windows 11

The update isn’t limited to Notepad. Microsoft Paint is also receiving enhancements with a new sticker generator, allowing users to create custom stickers from simple text descriptions. Additionally, Paint now includes an object select tool, using AI to simplify the task of isolating specific elements in images.

Snipping Tool Gets Smarter

The Windows 11 Snipping Tool also gets smarter. A new Perfect Screenshot button automatically resizes selections intelligently based on content, helping users create cleaner and more accurate captures. A new color picker tool allows for precise color identification in HEX, RGB, or HSL formats, complete with zoom functionality.

AI Access and Requirements

To access the new Notepad Write feature and other AI enhancements, users need to be signed into their Microsoft account. These tools will operate on the same credits system as other AI-powered features in Windows 11. While pricing details have yet to be announced, this signals Microsoft’s broader integration of generative AI throughout its ecosystem.
