Skywatchers across parts of the northern U.S. may be treated to a magical display this weekend as the northern lights—also known as the aurora borealis—are forecasted to return on the night of Saturday, June 14, 2025.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a G2 geomagnetic storm watch has been issued, which means the aurora could be visible from Idaho to New York and other northern-tier and upper Midwest states. The G2 classification represents a moderate level of geomagnetic activity, strong enough to produce vibrant ribbons of color in the night sky.

What Causes the Northern Lights?

This awe-inspiring natural phenomenon is triggered by solar activity, including solar flares and coronal mass ejections. As these events send streams of charged particles toward Earth, they interact with the planet’s magnetic field, producing glowing waves of green, red, and purple light across polar skies.

Where and When to Watch

The best chances for seeing the northern lights this weekend will be in areas with clear skies, low light pollution, and northern latitudes. However, as we approach the summer solstice (June 20–21), longer daylight hours may shorten the viewing window.

Earlier this month, viewers across 16 U.S. states were lucky enough to see the dazzling lights—and this weekend might offer another shot.

Can You See the Aurora with the Naked Eye?

Absolutely. No special equipment is needed to view the northern lights—just the right conditions. Keep your eyes on the sky during late-night to early-morning hours, and head somewhere dark with an unobstructed northern view.
