Deciding which car to buy can get confusing especially when so many vehicles available in the market are almost the same size.
Many people don’t know the differences between the two cars which are offered by the same manufacturer. We come across many consumers who ask, “Which car should I buy Honda CR-V or Honda HR-V? What is the difference between them?
Today we are going to explore the major differences between two popular car models HR-V and CR-V.
The Honda CR-V features a sporty and stylish exterior. The front of the car is quite busy with a lot of elements. The rear of the SUV comes with L-shaped tail lamps.
Honda HR-V is quite akin to the CR-V in its appearance. However, its proportions are a little upright (which could be due to its tiny size). A bigger difference between both cars are the rear door handles which are vertically mounted. On the rear part of the vehicle, you will find a rear hatch spoiler and pointed taillights.
Fuel Economy and Engine
Earlier the CR-V used to come up with a 2.4-liter powerplant. In the recent revamp, the brand replaced it with a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine.
- The 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine features 190 hp and 179 lb-ft of torque
- It comes with a CVT gearbox, the crossover is offered in all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive
Some CR-V owners complained they had some minor issues with the engine when it was first launched. However, Honda rectified the problems immediately by providing extended warranties and fixing faulty cars.
- According to EPA, the rating for the Honda CR-V FWD 1.5-liter turbo-four and CVT automatic transmission was 28 mpg-city and 34 mpg-highway and 30 mpg-combined.
- The all-wheel drive variants offer 27 mpg-city, 33 mpg-highway, and 29 mpg-combined.
The highlights of HRV are:
- The engine in HR-V is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder, 141 HP, and 127 lb-ft of torque.
- Honda has also introduced the turbo engine in the HR-V line-up. As of now, there is only one transmission that is CVT. Previously, it had manual transmission but now Honda excluded it.
- The FWD HR-V with CVT gives 28 mpg-city, 34 mpg-highway, and 31 mpg-combined. While the AWD HR-V offers 27 mpg-city, 31 mpg-highway, and 29 mpg-combined.
Driving and Ride Comfort
The CR-V is sporty and agile. When you get behind the wheel, you will feel that the car is rigid and sturdy. But the rigidness does not reduce its comfort or smoothness. The new powerful suspensions make your rides calm and relaxing. It is also a little heavier that gives it greater handling capabilities.
There is not much between both cars in terms of driving. Just like CR-V, HR-V also has a nimble and easy to grab steering which offers stunning handling and turning. The ride quality is also superior with firm suspension.
The CR-V is offered at $28,680 for the base EX model which makes it a bit pricier than the CR-V. To get the AWD, you will have to pay some additional money.
- LX Hybrid: $28,870
- EX-L: $31,170
- EX Hybrid: $31,380
- EX-L Hybrid: $33,870
- Touring: $34,370

Honda CR-V is a midsize SUV with 39.2 cubic feet of cargo space when all seats are engaged and it extends to 75.8 cubic feet when you fold down the second row. The total passenger volume in the midsize crossover is 102.9 cubic feet. It can carry five people at a time. The front legroom is 41.3 inches and the rear second-row legroom is 40.4 inches.
On the other hand, the HR-V is a compact-sized crossover. It comprises 24.3 cubic feet of cargo space. With 41.2 inches front legroom and 39.3 inches rear legroom, the total passenger volume is 100.1 cubic feet. A unique feature that you will not find in the CR-V is the magic seats, which can be folded up to haul taller items.
