Sergey Tokarev: How Reface conquered the world charts within a year

Sergey Tokarev, a prominent RefaceAI investor, talked about the success of Reface, a face replacement app. It is undoubtedly one of the most successful IT developments by a Ukrainian company in recent times. The app has already topped the US App Store charts in terms of the number of downloads. On the global level, the app has conquered the charts within a year.

The Reface app reached the top of the US app markets back in summer 2020. It allows users to swap faces on videos and GIF-images. It surpasses various giants in the US app markets in the category of Entertainment including Netflix, YouTube, Facebook, and many more. Reface, formerly known as Doublicat, became the first Ukrainian apps to reach such heights on the world charts.

There are various other Ukrainian apps that grabbed attention at a global level including Grammarly, TravelPost, and Fander. However, the popularity pace of Reface is exceptional as compared to these Ukrainian apps. Sergey Tokarev shared his views about the exceptional performance of this face replacement giant.

The Journey of Reface to Reach 50 Million Downloads

The Reface app was officially released on January 13, 2020, as Doublicat. The app topped 1 million downloads in the first few months. After six months of its release, the app crossed the milestone of five million downloads. The company reported 20 million Reface downloads by the end of August. On September 7, the number of downloads reached 35 million. In August, the app crossed many other giants at the global level including Amazon, YouTube, Zoom, and TikTok, in terms of the number of downloads. The app is currently positioned at number one in the United States, the UK, Canada, Australia, and various other countries. Sergey Tokarev noted, “As of the end of October 2020, Reface is in the top 10 in the App Store and in the top 20 in the Google Play Top Free Entertainment Apps in the United States.” He also said that Reface had crossed 50 million downloads. The users of the app create hundreds of thousands of videos every day by using this app.

Reface and Celebrities

Reface is not only famous among ordinary users but also among the top celebrities across the world. Snoop Dog, Dua Lipa, Jennifer Lopez, Brittney Spears, and many more have used this app to swap faces. The app also grabbed the attention of various Ukrainian artists. Jerry Heil, a Ukrainian singer, worked with RefaceAl to create a video, #Blogger, in which the face-swapping technology was used extensively.

The app creators said that the app grew by 90% organically. The app also grabbed the attention of famous media outlets including Forbes, Techcrunch, Mashable, and VICE. Sergey Tokarev said, “In 65% of cases, users post videos and photos created in Reface on their social media accounts.” The media outlets mentioned the app almost 600 times so far at the global level.

Sergey Tokarev About Reface Technology

Sergey Tokarev expressed his views on the technology used in Reface, “If you compare it to analogs, the advantage of Reface is that the technology incorporated into it does not just replace one face with another with good quality, but does it in real-time, literally in seconds.” Reface works on the GAN (Generative Adversarial Network) machine learning algorithm. The RefaceAI team worked on the development of this technology in-house. The competitors of Reface mostly use the CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery) technology. Moreover, Reface is more keen to pay attention to safety and social responsibility. The company is developing software to detect fake videos created by using face replacement technologies.
